Konstantin Meladze

Childhood and Education

Konstantin Meladze was born on May 11, 1963, in Batumi, into the family of Shota Konstantinovich and Nelly Akakievna Meladze.
Konstantin has a brother, Valery Meladze, a singer, and a sister, Liana Meladze, a producer at Velvet Music.
At the age of six, after watching the film Polonaise Oginsky, Kostya became interested in music. Initially, he wanted to learn to play the violin, so his mother enrolled him in a music school. Over time, Meladze also tried playing the piano.
When a guitar appeared in the house, he learned to play it and often performed for friends and acquaintances.

After finishing school, Konstantin worked for a year as a mechanic at a shipbuilding plant in Batumi.
In 1988, he graduated from the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding in Mykolaiv, where he studied alongside his brother Valery. After completing his studies, Konstantin worked as a design engineer in a design bureau.

Career

During their university years, the Meladze brothers participated in the institute’s amateur performances. In November 1985, Konstantin joined the band April as a keyboardist, and a month later, Valery joined as the band’s vocalist.

After graduating from the shipbuilding institute, the future producer worked as a design engineer. However, in 1989, Konstantin and Valery chose a music career and became members of the popular Soviet rock band Dialogue.
In 1992, the Meladze brothers left Dialogue to focus on their own projects. They created a program where Valery performed songs exclusively composed by Konstantin. In 1993, Alla Pugacheva, having heard their songs, invited Valery to perform at the New Year’s show Christmas Meetings, which marked the beginning of their nationwide popularity. Their debut album Sera, released in 1995, broke sales records, and Valery was named Best Performer of the Year.

In 2000, Konstantin Meladze, along with Ukrainian businessman Dmitry Kostyuk, founded the female pop group VIA Gra, acting as its producer and the author of all its musical albums.
In 2001, Meladze became the composer and music producer for the musical Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka. In 2002, he produced Cinderella, and in 2004, The Sorochyntsi Fair. In 2007, he was the producer of Star Factory 7 on Channel One. In 2006, he also served as the music producer for Valery Todorovsky’s film Hipsters. In 2009, he produced Star Factory 3 in Ukraine. From 2010 to 2012, he was the music producer for the Ukrainian version of The Voice on the 1+1 channel.

 

Since 2008, he has been the producer and songwriter for Vera Brezhneva. In 2013 and 2014, he produced the TV shows “I Want to Join VIA Gra” and “I Want to Join Meladze”.

In 2013, Meladze composed the soundtrack for the TV series “Thaw” and created the symphonic ballet “The Great Gatsby”, choreographed by American ballet master Dwight Rhoden.

Additionally, Konstantin has worked as a producer for various artists and groups, such as Yin-Yang, BiS, MBAND. He has also written songs for Alla Pugacheva, Sofia Rotaru, and others.

In 2012, he was recognized as the Best Composer of the Last 20 Years in Ukraine, and in 2014, he received the same title in Russia.
